Upstairs at the Ritzy — Get Laughs or Die Trying

Within the last handful of years, London has established itself as a hotbed for stand up comedy.

Historic clubs such as the Comedy Cellar and the Piccadilly comedy club, as well as Top Secret comedy club make up the texture of the exciting stand up circuit.

One club, that has set itself apart is the comedy night “Upstairs at the Ritzy”, hosted by the always thoughtful, always funny Sotonye Ogan.

Hosted on the last Tuesday of every night in the top floor of the Ritzy Cinema, Ogan’s night brings out some of the brightest stars in the city.

In the comfy loft high above Brixton Oval, comedy goers can enjoy acts from all over the UK and parts of Europe. Promising performers such as Mamoun Elagab and Ali Woods were featured in April’s showcase. Past shows have also featured Akin Omobitan, Ophelie Hocquard, and Muriel Oduro, many of whom will be stopping by Edinburgh this summer.

The importance of nights like this is that they give smaller comics on the circuit a chance to develop their material in extremely intimate settings, as well as carve out their own space in the ever shifting expanse of the London circuit. The next night is May 29th.

Make sure you check it out, you won’t regret it.
